For 78 years, I have walked this earth, deeply committed to the roles I’ve taken on as a family member, counselor, husband, brother, and friend. My journey has been one of growth, self-reflection, and a relentless pursuit of love and meaning. Along the way, I’ve encountered self-doubt, but I’ve learned that these shadows of uncertainty are part of the human experience. What defines us is not the doubts themselves, but how we rise above them, embracing the light of our strengths and the gifts we bring to the world.
Growing up, my mother’s love wrapped tightly around me, but so did her overprotectiveness. Though well-intended, it left little room for risk-taking or self-discovery. As a result, I often felt unsure of myself, hesitant to step beyond familiar boundaries. Yet despite these challenges, my parents nurtured in me a deep love for music, and my uncle Bill became a guiding light, offering lessons far beyond notes and chords.
Even now, I can picture my father’s furniture store vividly— the scent of polished wood and new fabric, the soft glow of lamp displays, and the bustling energy of customers coming and going. I can hear the voices of my father and his colleagues, the hum of conversation, and the occasional sound of a cash register ringing. It was more than a store; it was a stage where some of the earliest acts of my personal development played out, for better or worse. As I reflect on the lasting influence of my father, Murray, I am struck by the quiet but profound legacy he left behind. His presence, even in memory, is a source of comfort and guidance—an enduring touchstone in my life. I often feel his essence in moments when I seek serenity amidst the chaos of everyday life. He taught me the value of steady, unwavering love and the importance of being a grounding force for those around me. Murray’s carefully handwritten letters from my years in Ohio serve as a poignant reminder of his support and pride in my choices. He celebrated my decision to pursue a career in biofeedback and counseling with a curiosity and encouragement that made me feel seen and valued.
